Maysteel LLC
Founded in 1936, Maysteel is a Wisconsin-based manufacturer of enclosures,
capacitor banks, switchgear and electrical components and assemblies for
the power distribution industry. Maysteel has four manufacturing
locations (three in Wisconsin and one in Ireland), and was purchased in
1965 by the US-based Everett Smith Group, Ltd.
Maysteel has
contracted Foreign Targets to manage its export efforts and market the
firm's extensive product offering to the foreign power distribution
industry. With the US and Western electrification markets now in maturity, other
less developed countries are experiencing phenomenal growth in power demand as
economic expansion fuels the need for infrastructure development,
including electrification. Anticipated domestic demand for
electricity is expected to be a stagnant 1.8% through 2025, compared with
3.5% in several foreign markets, with trillions of dollars to be invested
by both China and India for power distribution development in that same
period. Such
tepid US demand is due largely to a slowing population growth,
efficiencies of power distribution and market saturation of electric
appliances not found in most of the developing world where population
growth and power distribution expansion is on the rise.
Maysteel produces the
capacitor switch, the capacitor controller, junction box and the metal
rack for pole-mount capacitor banks and enclosures for pad-mount capacitor
banks.

UltraVac Vacuum Switch

VS Vacuum Switch
|
UltraVac Solid
Dielectric Vacuum Switch – The top of the
line offered by Maysteel for its performance and durability, the
UltraVac is a solid dielectric vacuum switch which eliminates all oil,
foam or SF6 insulation, lowering maintenance costs and addressing
environmental concerns over possible oil spills. The most costly of
Maysteel’s switches initially, selling points are its rugged design,
number of mechanical operations (30,000) and lower maintenance costs.
The UltraVac is rated for up to 20kV ungrounded and 34.5kV if system
is grounded (which translates to 19.9kV ungrounded).
The UltraVac is rated for 95BILup to
150BIL (grounded) systems. The UltraVac uses a lighter,
psychoalaphatic epoxy type bushing which is substantially lighter and
more durable than the porcelain bushing used in Maysteel’s VS or CSD
switches or by other capacitor switch manufacturers.
The VS Series vacuum switch combines
the extended operating life and maintenance-free benefits of a vacuum
interrupter with the insulation advantages of oil. The switch is
designed to perform in excess of 30,000 operations and switch should
last over 30 years under normal operating conditions.
Features of the VS Series vacuum switch
include:
- The 24kV switch is the highest
voltage single-phase switch on the market. The 24kV switch can
also be used to provide more cost effective three phase capacitor
bank switching on 23kV ungrounded systems and 38kV grounded systems.
- An extended vacuum bottle gap,
compared to competitive products, helps the switch achieve TRUE
BIL levels; when the switch is open, the BIL rating is not
reduced. Performance is not sacrificed, as the vacuum bottle is
still good for at least 30,000 operations.
- The switch is motor-operated and
draws only 3 amps versus 12 amps for equivalent solenoid-operated
vacuum switches. The motor is more forgiving during poor power
factor or low voltage conditions, operating properly within a
voltage range of 100-130 VAC for a 120 VAC nominal secondary voltage
system.
- The option of complete manual
operation. An external power source is not required to close the
switch manually.
- Direct replacement for all current
and previously manufactured oil switches currently installed on
pole-mount capacitor banks. It's easy to upgrade your existing
pole-mount capacitor banks with our maintenance-free, long-life
vacuum switch without any additional wiring or hardware.

CSD Oil Switch |
Trinetics Oil Type CSD
Switch – Offering the same rugged 30,000 mechanical operations as the
other switches, the CSD is the lowest priced switch offered by
Maysteel. The CSD Series oil
switch offers a time-proven and industry tested product design that
provides a cost-efficient solution to capacitor bank switching.Unique
benefits and features found in the CSD Series oil switch include:
- Easily access for service
- A higher continuous current rating
than competitors' switches on our CSD 20kV switch. The CSD 20kV is
rated for 90 amps of continuous current versus 60 amps for similarly
rated oil switches
- A BIL rating of 150kV on the CSD
20kV switch
- Extra creepage bushings of 24-inch
creep.
